How to Get the Best Family Photos: My top 7 tips for a stress free family session

Family photos are a wonderful way to capture memories, but the process of getting everyone ready and in front of the camera can feel overwhelming. A little preparation goes a long way in making your session smooth, enjoyable, and full of natural smiles. Here are some tips to ensure you get the best possible family photos.

1. Choose the Right Time for your Family Photos

Timing is everything when it comes to great photos. The best natural lighting happens during the “golden hour”—shortly after sunrise or before sunset—when the light is soft and flattering. Fall and spring offer the earliest session times, which is great for young children. If you have young children, and your session is later in the evening, adjust nap and meal times to later.

2. Coordinate Outfits Without Matching

Instead of identical outfits, aim for a cohesive look by choosing a color palette of 2-3 complementary colors. Neutrals, pastels, and earthy tones photograph beautifully. Avoid large logos, busy patterns, or neon colors, which can be distracting in photos. Most importantly, wear something comfortable so you can move naturally. Your photographer should offer you styling help if needed.

3. Keep Your Family Photos Lighthearted and Fun

The best family photos capture genuine moments, not forced poses. Play with your kids, share inside jokes, and interact naturally. Your photographer will guide you with prompts to encourage laughter and connection, making the session feel effortless.

4. Prep Your Kids (and Spouse!) in Advance

Let your kids know ahead of time that the session will be fun rather than stressful. Bring non-messy snacks, or treat as a reward for cooperation. Small marshmallows are one of my favorite bribing tools! If your partner isn’t excited about taking photos, remind them that it’s a short session and a special way to capture family memories. (Bribes for them are never a bad idea either!)

5. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection

The most cherished family photos are the ones that show love and emotion, not just perfectly posed smiles. Don’t stress over every detail—if your toddler refuses to stand still or your child makes a silly face, embrace those moments! They reflect the personality of your family and make the photos even more meaningful.

6. Trust Your Photographer

A professional photographer knows how to guide you into flattering poses, work with lighting, and capture candid moments. Trust their expertise, and don’t be afraid to ask for guidance if you feel unsure about anything during the session.

7. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

If you’re feeling stressed, it will show in the photos. Take a deep breath, have fun with your family, and let go of the idea of perfection. The best images come when you’re present in the moment, enjoying time with your loved ones. By preparing ahead of time and focusing on connection over perfection, you’ll end up with beautiful, meaningful images that you’ll cherish for years to come.
